TINT TINT MYANMAR AGRIBUSINESS

SUMMARY

This is part of the Tint Tint Myanmar Group of Companies "Sustainable Social Development" Program to enhance the income, education, health and access to energy of the rural communities of the Myanmar Union. This specific agriculture sustainability program will provide income for farmers, work for rural communities and employment in processing and transport, earn valuable export income and potentially substitute for imports and therefore raise the wellbeing and standard of living of the Myanmar rural communities.

MARKET

Tint Tint Myanmar Agribusiness has negotiated an export contract to supply cassava and cassava products of up to 800,000t/yr in perpetuity valued at between $US144m/yr and $US320m/yr, depending on the degree of processing. Additional export sales are possible for starch, flour, ethanol and stock food to Europe and other non-Asian countries. It is expected that significant domestic markets in the food industries will develop, especially in substituting for imported wheat.

PRODUCTION

The Company will work with farmers especially in the Irrawaddy, Bago and South Chan areas. The potential number of farmers is likely to be 15-20,000 when in full production, but it might be not be with the same farmers each year. The company has the option, depending on circumstances, of having the product delivered to a central site or collected from the farm gate. The company is expecting to diversify into other crops if they are synergistic with cassava. A University will be established within the area to provide a full educational system for rural communities including in all aspects of agriculture.

PROCESSING

The minimal processing on or off the farm will be chipping and drying cassava plants to produce cassava chips which can be traded and exported. The financial payment will depend on the degree of processing, volume and quality. Tint Tint Myanmar Agribusiness believes it is in the farmers and country's best interest to further process the roots to flour or starch ie add value, to substantially increase the export value of the crop. The company is working to secure processing facilities. This is likely to be of European origin. There will be a need to train staff to run and maintain the specialised processing facilities.

LOGISTICS

The transport of the crop from the farm to the processing or consolidation hub requires a fleet of trucks, and while this can be assumed by the company to be sourced, it is potentially a bottle neck to achieving the level of exports required. In addition, there is the need to package and truck the product to the port for sea transport. These logistics will limit where cassava can be grown and also the cost of transport will impact the financial viability. The availability of a contractor with sufficient and appropriate transport equipment could also impact the viability of this company and the whole Myanmar cassava industry.

CORPORATE MANAGEMENT

Tint Tint Myanmar Agribusiness will be overseen by an International Board with two major divisions, one for production and the other for processing. Strong cloud accounting and control systems will be in place, serviced by experienced management teams. The unique development will be field officers to connect with farmers to give support and give advice from agronomy to finance. The company will work closely with the Ministry of Agriculture through the MOU.

Support by the Myanmar Agriculture Ministry a new sustainable new Cassava Industry is been developed that will benefit The Myanmar Union and also all the small Land Holders and rural communities involved will have their lively hood improve.

The Finances

The initial plan was to just buy the cassava from the farmers that’s already farming the crop, but when we investigated and found that the whole cassava crop is not grown uniformly and the source is scattered over vast distances. As a consequence cost of logistics was a major impediment. TTMA has a model to micro finance the farmers to produce the best crop.

It is estimated $15 Million is required to fund the start up of the business and together with the support of the Myanma Ministry of Agriculture to develope a new sustainable cassava industry that would benefit all involved.

The business is not expect to make any significant profit until the 4th or 5th Year of operations as the first 2-3 years will be involved in establish and expanding the operations.

As part of the operations are non business related, like educating, training and micro financing the 20,000 farmers over 3 vast distances zones, TTMA hopes that ADB would fund these activities through a government sponsor scheme or give TTMA the grants to fund these activities, as this is some thing that will benefit the Myanmar Union and the farmers involved.

The business operations has already commenced with TTMA’s own funds, through the help of the Agricultural Minister facilitating meetings with farmers, the consequence the up take by the farmers has been overwhelming so the need for immediate funding has been increasing.

1st Year 2016

The initial activities will be in designing a layout for the various activities on the farm and obtaining resources. This will include aspects relating to location and size of the processing operations, onsite or off site and on logistics. The essential resources will be staff, machinery and plant material with a business manager already appointed and a farm manager to be appointed immediately. The area proposed to be established in Year 1 if 2016-17, will be 1,000 ha of cassava. The utilisation of product will be between dried chips and starch or flour. This will be determined by the progress made in determining the processing equipment and assembling it on site.

2nd and 3rd Year 2017-2018

The second and third years of the project will result in expansion in other area and the range of products from cassava by combining with other landholders. The area will increase from to 500 to 2,500 to 5,000 ha in successive years. This will allow the farm to multiply up its own requirements of plant cuttings for replanting each year. The product range will increase as the cassava production increases. It may also at that time decide to start to expand into flour and ethanol production. At the same time the by products will increase and the animal and fish production will increase proportionally.

Initially the focus will be on the use of the production from the farm will be for animal feeds on the farm and developing the local use and the Li Bu Group contracts. As the volume of production increases, there is the potential to export to many countries a range of products. This will include stock foods, starch and ethanol to the EU countries such as Hungary and other Asian countries such as Australia and India. This will strengthen the Myanmar economy both through exports and internal substitution for imports.

Animal Feeds as By Products

Cassava can be used directly as an animal feed supplement and the byproducts of starch and ethanol production can also be used in animal feeds. In the case of fish, the byproducts of fish can be added to cassava byproducts to produce a balanced diet. Other crops can be grown in the cassava rotation specifically for animal feeds. In addition, special areas on the farm could be used for additional animal feeds. The production of the additional meat products will be supplied the local Yangon market.

Fish Farming

The farm with its warm climate and local fish feeds will be able to grow the fish faster. The fish will be sold into the local market but the potential for export will be considered

Other Livestock

The prospect of producing animal feedstocks as byproducts on site, means a range of products could be produced for the Yangon general or specialised markets. The Yangon market is already big but will also require specialised products for the hotel, health and tourists markets. This includes eggs and poultry meats, pork or bacon, milk or meat from cows. Cassava flour could also be produced for the local bakery and bread trade. Where possible, the products will be organically produced and the gluten free nature of cassava gives it a health marketing advantage.

Research projects will be focussed on increasing the starch yield from production, through better genetic varieties, harvesting techniques and storage conditions. Optimising sustainably water use will be investigated.

Processing will be crucial to adding value to the industry. The need is to reduce the capital cost of the processing plant and this will be investigated. The primary operational cost is in energy for drying. A special project will investigate the use of solar energy and other new developments.

A special investigation has started to evaluate a new technology that would have immediate impact on drying starch but also could be the replacement fuel for boats and trucks. Cassava is a perishable crop if not process immediately, so Initial year of operations we envisage to use a Dutch mobile processing plant as that’s the most suitable because most of the farms in Myanmar are small and no infrastructres and power supply and water quality is an issue. As the founder of this technology have been in the cassava industry for more than 40 years and developed a highly sophisticated mobile processing plant that produces a very high quality cassava flour/starch, and because it’s mobile and being able to process on site of the farm all the effluent discharges are used as fertilisers back on the land, and hence reduces the need for Chemical fertilisers.

Quality control:

Quality starts with the selection of the varieties. High starch varieties will be chosen, of proven quality. During production there will be close control of both fertilisation and fertilisers to ensure high quality is obtained. Harvesting and post harvest management is critical to maintain product quality.

During processing there will be programs in place to both ensure and audit product quality. The contract has quality requirements to be met and these will be monitored continually

Environmental/resource impacts

Water is essential to both production and processing and will be critically managed throughout the business. This particularly involves the selection and design of the processing equipment and its operational management. Fortunately cassava will be grown in high rainfall areas and sustainable ground water resources are available at the sites currently being considered for processing plant.

Nitrogen is critical for high yielding cassava production. There are dangers of excessive use of nitrogen and that this would get into waterways and groundwater. There will be extensive controls over the timing and quantity of the applications.

Community impact & engagement

The company will directly engage with the farmers as suppliers of product. Cassava farming engages with the rural community and financially rewards both farmers and rural families directly.
